Portugal defeated Denmark 4-2 in the UEFA Nations League despite playing without captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the national team camp shortly before the match.

João Cancelo and Gonçalo Ramos put Portugal ahead twice in the first half, but Denmark responded through Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Højlund. Vitinha restored Portugal’s lead in the second half before João Félix added a fourth late on.

Ronaldo had left the camp following a reported disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. Ronaldo said he would explain his reasons for leaving “in due course”.

The departure could also have disciplinary consequences. The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary regulations provide for a suspension of between one and six months, plus a possible fine, for a player who abandons or fails to attend national-team activities without justification.

It is not yet clear whether Ronaldo’s departure will be deemed unjustified or whether the federation will impose a sanction.
