Government is to establish a committee to determine compensation for people whose businesses and properties were affected by the demolition of facilities at La Pleasure Beach in Accra.
The committee is expected to be constituted by early next week and will assess the claims of affected persons before determining appropriate compensation, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and La Dadekotopon MP, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, has disclosed.
Mrs Sowah made the disclosure when she appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Local Government and Decentralisation on Tuesday, October 6, following the demolition exercise at the beach.
She said data on affected persons had already been compiled to support the compensation process, although the specific form and amount of compensation had not yet been determined.
The committee will include representatives from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, management of the affected beaches and the La Dadekotopon constituency.
The development follows a demolition exercise carried out at La Pleasure Beach on October 2 by a joint team of military and police personnel.
The exercise resulted in the destruction of several structures and affected businesses operating at the facility, with the La Dadekotopon MP subsequently questioning the basis and manner of the demolition.

Government’s proposed compensation process is intended to address the losses suffered by affected businesses and property owners while authorities continue discussions over the redevelopment and management of the area.
