The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to commission a new multi-purpose abattoir at Jamestown as part of efforts to improve meat processing standards and protect public health in the metropolis.
The facility has been developed to provide a dedicated centre for the slaughtering, inspection, processing and storage of animals intended for public consumption under improved sanitary and veterinary conditions.
The new abattoir includes an offloading bay, veterinary section, changing rooms, storage facilities, washrooms, freezing bays, slaughtering and slamming areas, an animal drinking pond and a cattle lairage for holding animals before slaughter.
The facility’s layout is designed to allow animals to be received and kept in designated areas before undergoing veterinary examination and approval for slaughter.
It is also expected to improve monitoring of meat processing by providing designated spaces for the different stages of animal handling, from reception and inspection through to slaughtering, processing and storage.
The AMA says the facility will help strengthen compliance with food safety, veterinary and environmental health requirements, while providing safer and more hygienic conditions for meat prepared for consumers across the metropolis.
The commissioning is expected to take place in the coming days, marking another step in the Assembly’s efforts to improve public health infrastructure and standards within Accra’s meat-processing sector.
