The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has given authorities of the Metro Mass Transit terminal at Kaneshie First Light 24 hours to clean up the facility or face legal action.

The directive was issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, when the Mayor stopped at the terminal on his return from an inspection of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project site in front of Accra Academy.

Mr Allotey expressed concern about the sanitary condition of the terminal and warned that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would not tolerate filth at public transport facilities.

He said transport terminals, markets, shops and other public spaces must meet the Assembly’s sanitation standards, stressing that managers of public facilities had a responsibility to maintain clean surroundings.

The Mayor directed the terminal authorities to clean the area within 24 hours, warning that failure to comply would result in legal action.

The directive comes as the AMA intensifies its sanitation and enforcement drive across the capital. The Assembly has recently announced a Post-Homowo clean-up exercise and warned that individuals and businesses that fail to comply with sanitation requirements could face arrest, fines or prosecution before the Sanitation Court.

Mr Allotey also cautioned shop owners operating around the terminal against displaying or selling goods on pavements.

He said the practice obstructs pedestrian movement and contributes to disorder along major roads and public spaces.

The Mayor has previously led enforcement operations around Kaneshie, including measures targeting the misuse of public spaces and activities contributing to congestion and safety concerns.

The latest directive forms part of the AMA’s wider efforts to improve sanitation, decongest public spaces and enforce city by-laws across Accra.
