The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun enforcing its tricycle safety directive following the expiration of the August deadline given to riders to comply with mandatory road safety measures.

The enforcement exercise took place at Kaneshie First Light on Thursday, September 3, 2026, as the Assembly checked riders’ compliance with measures introduced to improve visibility and reduce crashes involving tricycles in the metropolis.

The directive requires tricycle operators to install reflective stickers on the rear and sides of their vehicles, while riders are expected to wear helmets, reflective jackets and other appropriate safety gear.

The measures are intended to make tricycles and their riders more visible to other road users, particularly on busy roads and highways, and help prevent avoidable crashes.

During the exercise, AMA officials engaged riders and inspected their level of compliance with the safety requirements.

The Assembly had previously given riders a grace period to comply, with the deadline expiring at the end of August.

AMA Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the enforcement was not intended to punish riders but to protect tricycle operators, passengers and other road users.

The Assembly is expected to continue the enforcement of the safety measures as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce crashes involving commercial tricycles across the metropolis.
