The Greater Accra Police Command has arrested two men after they allegedly attempted to bribe a police officer with GH¢30,000 to secure the release of a truck and 175 slabs of suspected narcotic substances.
The arrests followed an operation by the Bravo SWAT Unit on September 11, 2026, after police received intelligence that a Kia Rhino truck was allegedly transporting and distributing suspected narcotics in Accra.
Police said officers intercepted the truck at Abofu, near Achimota, after tracing it from Kpandai in the Oti Region.
The occupants allegedly fled after seeing the police, leaving the truck behind. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 175 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, concealed in three sacks and three “Ghana Must Go” bags.
The truck and suspected substances were taken to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Two men later appeared at the police headquarters and allegedly claimed ownership of the truck and its contents. They were identified as Mark Bangel, a trader from Kpandai, and Zakaria Arafat, who identified himself as a mechanic from Kpando in the Volta Region.
According to police, the two men subsequently offered GH¢30,000 to the Bravo SWAT Unit Commander in an attempt to secure the release of the truck and seized substances.
The alleged bribe money was retrieved and the two men were arrested.
Police said further investigations have identified a third person, known only as Salam, who allegedly drove the truck and its suspected narcotic cargo from Kpandai to Accra.
Efforts are underway to locate and arrest him.
The two suspects are assisting with investigations, while the truck and suspected narcotic substances remain in police custody as exhibits. The allegations have not been tested in court.
