The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says it has identified two people who allegedly intervened to facilitate the departure of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah during an attempted arrest at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
EOCO said the two individuals were identified from video footage of the incident and that their conduct is being assessed for possible further lawful action. The Office did not name the individuals in its statement.
The development follows a confrontation at the court premises after EOCO officers attempted to arrest Mr Baffour Awuah in connection with an ongoing investigation.
According to EOCO, the MP had previously been invited on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with the investigation, but did not honour the invitations. The Office said it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law.
The attempted arrest escalated at the court premises, with videos circulating on social media showing a confrontation between the MP, persons identified as EOCO officers and individuals accompanying him. Baffour Awuah eventually drove away from the scene.
EOCO said the arrest was not successfully completed after its officers assessed that a counter-action at the scene could have endangered public safety.
The MP later proceeded to the precincts of Parliament, where he sought sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.
EOCO said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations within the Constitution and applicable laws.
It, however, stressed that parliamentary membership does not by itself bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law. The Office also said it would not take any action inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or other constitutional protections.
Baffour Awuah, who is also a lawyer, has given a different account of the incident. He said the woman who approached him did not produce an arrest warrant or evidence establishing that she was an EOCO officer and that he drove away because he feared for his safety. Those claims have not been independently established.

The incident occurred after the High Court proceedings involving the bail application of detained nurse Salomey Baffoe Awiti, whom Baffour Awuah represents. The bail hearing has been adjourned to Thursday, September 24, after the prosecution requested additional time to respond.
EOCO said its investigation remains active and that it will review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including available video evidence, before determining its next steps.
