The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has repaired and deployed 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses, increasing the number of operational buses serving commuters in the region to 128.

The additional buses have been deployed across major routes in Accra as part of efforts to improve public transport services and ease persistent traffic congestion.

GAPTE Managing Director Awudu Dawuda said increasing the number of operational buses had been a key priority since the organisation took over.

According to him, GAPTE inherited 80 operational buses and subsequently undertook repairs on 48 others to expand its capacity across its various routes.

β€œThe 80 buses that we inherited – the most important thing was for us to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra Region – and so we had to repair over 48 buses and these buses have been added to the 80 buses and so we currently have 128 in our corridors,” he said.

The increase in the fleet is expected to provide additional capacity for commuters while supporting efforts to improve mobility within the Greater Accra Region.

Dawuda disclosed the development during a visit by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, to the Madina Aayalolo terminal.

The visit was aimed at assessing the operations of the Aayalolo bus service and identifying measures to make the system more efficient for commuters.

GAPTE says the deployment of the repaired buses forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen public transport and address congestion in the capital.

The 128 operational buses are currently serving the various Aayalolo corridors across the Greater Accra Region.
