The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have formally begun consultations with the Ministry of Transport over a proposed upward review of public transport fares.
The unions presented the proposal at a meeting with the Transport Minister and his technical team in Accra on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
However, no decision has yet been taken to increase fares, with the unions and government agreeing that further assessment is needed before any adjustment is announced.
The review comes amid discussions over the operating costs of commercial transport operators, including the impact of fuel prices.
At the meeting, government pointed to prevailing macroeconomic conditions, measures to stabilise the cedi and, particularly, its GH¢2 per litre intervention on diesel prices, which was introduced to cushion transport operators and passengers.
The unions and government agreed that the full effect of the diesel intervention on operators’ costs must be assessed alongside the proposed fare increase before a final decision is reached.
A joint team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC has consequently been established to review the various cost inputs and make recommendations.
The outcome of the exercise will be communicated to the public in due course.
Until then, the existing approved transport fares remain in force across the country.
