President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC), urging them to uphold impartiality and protect the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.
At the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 12, 2026, President Mahama stressed that the Commission must treat all political parties, candidates and governments equally, regardless of who holds power.
He said the new appointees must exercise their authority fairly and in accordance with the law, adding that neither his government nor the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) should receive preferential treatment from the election management body.
The President also urged the two officials to ensure that every eligible Ghanaian can participate in elections and that every valid vote reflects the will of the people.
Ms Agbenyo previously served as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, while Dr Asamoah is a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Dr Asamoah also brings previous experience at the EC, having served as Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.
Their appointments fill vacancies created by the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare, who left his position as Deputy Chairperson responsible for Corporate Affairs effective July 31, 2026, and the retirement of Samuel Tettey, the former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations.
The appointments come as the EC continues its work of overseeing elections and safeguarding the electoral process in Ghana.
