Three people have been killed and at least 15 others injured following violent disturbances at New Winneba in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region.

The latest development is the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the violence, as security agencies continue investigations into the circumstances that triggered the clash.

The incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a group of about 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze reportedly stormed New Winneba.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the group was armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and attacked residents while damaging shops, stores and private residences.

A police officer was among those injured in the violence. The injured were taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba for treatment.

The Central Regional Police Command, Winneba Divisional Police Headquarters and patrol teams from the Agona Swedru District were deployed to contain the situation.

The Inspector-General of Police also directed additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters to reinforce the operation, with two armoured vehicles deployed to the area.

The Police say the situation has since been brought under control, although security personnel remain deployed to prevent further disturbances.

โ€œThree people have been confirmed dead, a security officer injured and about 15 other people wounded,โ€ the Central Regional Police Command said in a statement.

The cause of the violence has not been officially established, with police investigations ongoing.

The incident has, however, been linked in public accounts to longstanding tensions over land in the area. Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has alleged that some individuals operating as landguards have been involved in disputes over land at New Winneba.

He has called on the IGP to intervene and ensure that those responsible are brought before the law.

“I want the law to take its course. We want the IGP to come here,โ€ the MP said.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
