Lionel Messi is set to receive the Doctor Honoris Causa, the highest honorary distinction of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), in recognition of his contribution to Argentine sport and his role in leading the national team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title.

UBA’s Superior Council unanimously approved the distinction, citing Messi’s sporting career, perseverance, humility and commitment to representing Argentina.

The university said his achievements, including the 2022 World Cup triumph, reflect values it promotes. The award ceremony is scheduled for October 6, shortly before Messi plays his farewell match for Argentina against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

The honour comes as Argentina prepares to mark the end of Messi’s international career.
